Protect Hanoi Gates

The Hanoi Times - US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak announced June 3 a grant of US$74,500 for preserving the O Quan Chuong Gate, Hanoi’s last remaining old city gate.

Speaking at a ceremony to announce the grant, he said: “It is an honor and a very special pleasure for me to announce this year’s Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation award. This is the largest of these awards ever given to Vietnam, and it is my hope that this project will be an important part of Hanoi’s 1000th Anniversary celebration [next year].”

O Quan Chuong Gate was built in 1749 during the Le Dynasty era and bears the ravages of time, neglect, war, and urban expansion that have destroyed the other 15 gates, and is in desperate need of restoration.

With the grant, Vietnamese experts will work for several months to repair damaged sections and strengthen the gate’s foundation. They will also repair and consolidate adjacent sewerage systems to ensure a firm foundation for the gate.

The Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation was established by the US Department of State in 2001 to help less developed countries preserve cultural heritage.

It has provided more than US$16 million for more than 500 projects worldwide, including nine in Vietnam.

Attending the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Chien Thang; general director of the Cultural Heritage Department, Nguyen The Hung; general director of the International Cooperation Department, Nguyen Van Tinh; and some Hanoi officials
